Heng Lee ist ein Ziegenhirte nordöstlich von Chiang Rai in den abgelegenen Bergen im Norden Thailands, sehr nahe an der Grenze zu Laos. Er lebt in einer eng verbundenen Gemeinschaft, in der sich alle kennen. Heng wird plötzlich krank, aber nicht so schwer, dass er seine Ziegen nicht mehr auf die Weide treiben kann, bis er eines Tages zur örtlichen Schamanin gehen muss, weil er Ohnmachtsanfälle bekommt. Es gibt keine Ärzte in der Umgebung und ein Schamane war seit Jahrhunderten gut genug für die meisten Einwohner. Die Schamanin nimmt ein paar Proben und kommt zu dem Schluss, dass Hengs Nieren nicht mehr funktionieren, daher hat er nur noch kurze Zeit zu leben. Der Kampf um Hengs Leben beginnt, aber es sind auch noch andere Kräfte am Werk. Was wird aus Heng, seiner Familie und der restlichen Dorfgemeinschaft, wenn er den Rat der Schamanin befolgt?
